I'm wondering whether she was such a great model ALTHOUGH or BECAUSE of her personal trouble.

She didn't start off troubled... not as such as she became. I think she had a fire in her, a lust for life, a depth, an intelligence, a curiosity and ferocity that made her great. The pains she endured only exposed that depth and intensity even more, but I think personal trouble aside she would have remained as Great and unique as always.
